Our 2023 Plant of the Year ... is Blueberry!

Recently our members voted on the plant to focus on in 2023.

This year's choices included five pollinator-friendly native plants to choose from:

  • Goldenrod (Solidago spp.)
  • Sunflower (Helianthus)
  • Cinnamon Fern (Osmundastrum cinnamomeum)
  • Blueberry (Vaccinium spp)
  • Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium).

Blueberry gathered the most votes: "This selection would focus on blueberries native to our area, such as: Blue Ridge blueberry (Vaccinium pallidum), highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) and lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium). Same plant family as cranberry and deerberry, which all together support 276 species of butterflies and moths in Central Connecticut."

Last year's winning plant was Ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis).
