Seasons of Giving: Portland Gardeners Deck the Town

Many of the club's members gathered on Dec. 4 to create holiday wreaths.

The Portland River Valley Garden Club spread festive cheer during December, bringing beauty and joy to our community. Members supported three long-standing signature events to bring festive tidings to Portland.

First, members showcased their creativity with wreath-making. Using greens harvested from their own gardens, they crafted seven stunning evergreen wreaths adorned with vibrant red bows, holly, and other natural accents. One wreath was generously donated to the Festival of Wreaths fundraiser for the Portland Historical Society. The remaining wreaths now brighten key locations around town, including the senior center, the post office, and town hall.

The club also added a festive touch to the Portland Library with three beautifully decorated artificial Christmas trees. These whimsical trees feature garden-themed ornaments, including miniature tools, plant-inspired decorations, and even books, reflecting the club’s passion for horticulture and learning.

The trees are in a new location to the left front doors as you enter the building. They also now have lights and new gardening-themed ornaments donated or made by our members.

In the spirit of giving, members assembled elegant floral arrangements to be delivered to local Meals on Wheels recipients. Featuring fragrant greenery, cheerful red and white carnations, and festive accents, these arrangements were created to bring joy and warmth to community members during the holiday season.

These projects highlight the club’s creativity, generosity, and commitment to connecting with the community. Thank you to all the volunteers who made these events possible—your efforts have truly brightened the season!

Our members gathered early Dec. 21 to create beautiful tabletop arrangements to be delivered with the Meals on Wheels dinners for the holiday.
